Maidan Tent: A Beacon of Hope for Refugees

Designers Bonaventura Visconti and Leo Bettini Create a Community Space for Refugees

In an era where the refugee crisis is a pressing issue, designers Bonaventura Visconti and Leo Bettini have created the Maidan Tent, a community space designed to improve the quality of life for people living in refugee camps. This innovative design provides a safe and covered space for interaction, addressing both the physical and psychological needs of its inhabitants.

The Maidan Tent, named after the Arabic word for 'square', is an instantaneous square deployable anywhere. It is a multifunctional, adaptable space that can host up to a hundred people. The tent is specifically designed to cater to the psychological needs of people who have suffered migration traumas and is built to withstand all climate conditions.

The tent is made from a combination of two polymers, PU 20 and PES 80, for the covering, while the supporting structure is made from aluminium for the trusses and steel for the joints and connections to the floor. The tent's design allows for more air circulation and lets more light in compared to other tents of the same dimension. The use of an inflatable textile supported by a metal frame makes the space easier to heat during the winter and cooler during the summer.

The Maidan Tent is not just a shelter; it is a public space designed to foster social interaction. The tent is divided into eight sectors, zoned into two concentric areas. The center of the tent is an open common meeting place, surrounded by a ring of semi-private spaces where people can gather for more intimate activities. This design acknowledges the importance of social interaction in maintaining mental health and fostering community spirit.

The project started in May 2016 in Milan and was installed in the Ritsona refugee camp, Greece, in May 2017. The tent will remain in use until the camp is dismantled. The design process involved a psychiatrist who provided insights on the psychological impact of migration trauma and helped find practical architectural solutions.

The Maidan Tent has been recognized for its innovative design and social impact. It was awarded Silver in the A' Social Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise and innovation.

In conclusion, the Maidan Tent is a testament to the power of design in addressing pressing social issues. It goes beyond providing basic survival conditions, offering a space for refugees to live, interact, and regain a sense of normality in their lives. It is a beacon of hope, a symbol of resilience, and a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity.
